Flint Castle can be found in North East Wales overlooking the Dee Estuary towards England and the Wirral, on a site which had witnessed many battles between the Celts and Romans, British and Saxons, Welsh and Normans.

On Edward 1st's accession to the throne in 1272, Llywelyn ap Gruffydd (the Last) refused to swear allegiance.

By 1277 Edward 1st decided to put a halt to the Welsh threat and began to build his 'iron-ring' of castles in North Wales. Flint was chosen for its strategic position where access for reinforcements and supplies could be made by sea or land. Parliamentarian forces destroyed the castle, in 1646 during the civil war, but the ruins are still worth visiting.
