There does not seem to be any solid evidence as to the date of the construction of Ewloe Castle, but only various theories.

One theory suggests that the castle was built by Llywelyn ap Gruffydd about 1257 after regaining Ewloe from the English - but later it was thought that the Welsh Tower
was built by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth around 1210.
