Iron Age hillfort at Penycloddiau
|
Denbighshire, Sir Denbych, inland from the coastal regions of Rhyl and Prestatyn, holds many areas of historic interest, such as Bodelwyddan Castle, with attractions for all ages. Market towns such as Denbigh and Llangollen capture the beauty of the area whilst being steeped in welsh tradition. |
From the popular seaside resorts of Rhyl and Prestatyn with six miles of golden sands, through historic market towns in the Vale of Clwyd, and the picturesque mountains in the south of the county, Denbighshire has something for everybody.
The Vale of Clwyd and the upper reaches of the River Dee have been focuses of human settlement since ancient times. Native hill fortresses such as Dinorben and later Roman remains show the importance of the North Wales coastal route through Denbighshire, which was the site of two Roman roads. In the southeast is a section of Offa's Dyke, an earthwork that marked the boundary between Wales (west) and England (east). Among the county's medieval monuments is the beautiful, ruined Cistercian Valle Crucis Abbey, near Llangollen.
